MTN Ghana Just Made a $202 Million Bet On Ghana’s Digital Future To Secure It’s 5G Ambition
MTN Ghana is making a major bet on the future of connectivity, securing additional spectrum licences worth approximately $202 million to accelerate its 5G ambitions and strengthen its position in Ghana’s telecommunications industry.
The company has received notice from the National Communications Authority (NCA) awarding it additional spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands, with licences spanning 15 years.
The award includes 2 × 20 MHz in the 700 MHz band and 150 MHz in the 3 GHz band, giving MTN additional capacity to expand coverage, improve network performance and support growing demand for high-speed connectivity.
The investment goes beyond faster internet. The 700 MHz spectrum offers wider coverage and better indoor penetration, while the 3 GHz band provides additional capacity to serve more users and support data-intensive services.
MTN Ghana’s move represents a long-term investment in the country’s digital infrastructure, with the potential to expand 5G connectivity, strengthen fixed wireless broadband services and support businesses and consumers increasingly dependent on digital technology.
MTN’s $202 million investment committed also reinforces their ambition as a telecom to maintain its competitive position in Ghana’s telecom market as demand for mobile data, digital financial services and reliable connectivity continues to grow.
With the licences extending over 15 years, MTN is positioning itself for the next phase of Ghana’s digital economy. However, the full impact will depend on the pace of network deployment, investment in supporting infrastructure and the completion of the remaining licensing formalities.
